Frankston Special Developmental School provides a spacious, friendly, stimulating, caring and secure learning environment for children and young people aged 4 years to 18 years of age who have a moderate to severe intellectual disability.
Our students learn in active, practical and meaningful ways and the school aims to develop each child’s ability academically, socially, physically and emotionally. Our staff are dedicated and qualified professionals who are experienced in working with children with special, varied and often complex needs to provide the best education, self esteem and independence building opportunities for the students.
A comprehensive curriculum is implemented by our team and all programs are designed to maximise the potential of each individual student. Individual Education Plans are developed, implemented and reviewed in consultation with parents and other relevant personnel. All individual programs are developed and reviewed by a multi disciplinary team where appropriate.
Access is available to physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy where appropriate. Across the school there are varied communication methods used (Makaton, Picture Exchange Communication System, Cued Articulation).
Some of the programs the students participate in are Art, PE, Library, Cooking, Speech Therapy, Swimming PMP, Information Technology, Dance, Gardening, Advance Bridge and Challenge, (Duke of Ed), Music, Travel Training and Independent Living Skills.
The Early Education Program is a specifically designed program for pre school children with a significant developmental delay and has a developmental play focus with ongoing assessment. Formal and informal assessment is also a feature.
